Frequently we receive last-minute notices of events which will be posted on this website. We also have an e-mail list of JASM members to provide notification of these timely updates and others which may not have been published in the Calendar. If you would like to be on that list, please contact Lucy Sloan, takara@gwi.net, 207-771-0224.

On this page you will also find volunteering opportunities as needed for listed events. The range and depth of JASM's programs are influenced greatly by the number of members willing to help conduct them, which often doesn't require a substantial time commitment. To volunteer, or for further event information, contact JASM through the address and phone numbers listed at the top of the page.

August 3-24 > Rissho University - USM Summer Exchange Program

For the past 16 summers, Rissho University in Tokyo has sent students to USM to learn English and live with American students in Portland. The Rissho Roommate Program is a great way to make friends from Japan and show the Rissho students all that Maine has to offer! It runs from Sunday, August 3rd through Sunday August 24th. As part of the program, Maine students receive FREE room and board in Maine College of Art's Oak Street Dormitory during the program dates. In return, students are expected to hang-out with their roommate, and attend really fun field trips and activities, such as a bowling night and a day trip to Boston. All of the activities are free, and there are NO costs involved for the roommates!! Male and female roommates are needed, so for more information and a short application, please click here, or call USM's Office of International Programs at 780-5942. Students who attend other universities are welcome to apply.

But wait! That's not all! This year there are 24 students arriving, so as in years past, there is a critical need for host families to provide homestay opportunities for the students. The two weekends involved are August 8-10, and August 15-17. You may do one or both weekends, and take more than one student if you have the space! This is a tremendous opportunity to not only experience what someone from another culture has to offer you, but also one which gives you the chance to let them know who you are and what American culture is really about. Along with the welcome BBQ on the 8th, and graduation dinner on the 21st, your homestay experience will be one you will not likely forget. For further information, contact Max Calderwood ASAP by phone at 727-4207, or by email at maxc@usm.maine.edu.
