Traditional Music & Dance – Arts of the Geisha – A Lecture-Demonstration

March 3, 2016 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Yuko Eguchi ’03 is a native of Tokyo, Japan and holds a degree in Music (composition) from Bates College. She recently completed her Ph.D. in Ethnomusicology at the University of Pittsburgh. As the gei in the word geisha stands for arts in Japanese, geisha devote their lives to mastering various Japanese traditional music and dance forms. Among them, geisha have composed and preserved kouta (small songs) and koutaburi (dance of small songs) that are known to express iroke— roughly translated as sexiness or eroticism—through sound and movements. Join us to learn the history of geisha and to see geisha’s music and dance in performance.

Admission is Free and Open to the Public
